Hurricane Surfing – Surf Side Texas

G’day Poomen ans Poochicks

So i was down an English pub in Texas watching the German vs Argentina World Cup match (fantastic game by the Deutschlanders and are my tip to win it all). Anyway i speaking to an Indian looking fellow. Confused yet? 4 beers down before 10am and he mentions “because of Hurricane Alex there should be some surf down near Galveston”. My ears pricked up, surf in Texas? In the Gulf of Mexico? Hurricane? I’m there.

Ever since seeing Endless Summer II, i’ve always thought it’d be an interesting thing to surf Texas behind a massive oil tanker. Especially with Texans, a kick-arse big hat and a burrito in one hand. And although this day didnt bring any oil tankers, swell, big hats or burritos i still had a very interesting fun time.

We jumped in Adams car and headed 1 hour south of Houston to a place with a promising name “Surf Side”. We rented the biggest mal’s i could find, strapped them to the roof of the car and headed for the promised land. Unfortunately it turned out to be like Surfers Paradise and was 1-2ft sloppy choppy mess. The water was so warm you had to get out to cool down.

Just like Endless Summer it was a case of “you should of been here yesterday” or “you should of been here a few years ago”. Though the surf and winds were rubbish but aparently when a strong enough hurricane hits and the winds turn off shore it can be quite surfable.  Unfortunately i forgot to take my camera so you’ll have to make do with some photos flogged from around the web and old mate who took me there.
